Getting a new website indexed on Google is usually fast, but ranking well takes longer because a new site has no backlink history or engagement signals yet, so the first 90 days should focus on technical setup, a small set of achievable keywords and genuine content, not a rush for competitive terms.
1. Getting Indexed First
Submit an XML sitemap and use Google Search Console's URL inspection tool to request indexing for key pages. A technically clean site with no crawl blockers is usually indexed within a few days to a couple of weeks. Indexing simply means Google knows the page exists; it says nothing yet about where it will rank.
2. Why a New Site Ranks Worse Than an Established One
Domain age itself is a minor ranking factor, but older, established sites usually carry accumulated backlinks, a longer content history and real user engagement data that Google has come to trust. A new domain has none of that yet, and it has to be built, which is why patience matters more here than almost anywhere else in SEO.
3. Get the Technical Foundation Right Before Anything Else
Fast load times, mobile usability, clean URL structure and no duplicate or thin content give Google the best possible signal about a new site from day one. Fixing technical debt later, once a site has grown, is a much bigger project than getting it right from the start.
4. Target a Few Specific Keywords First
Trying to rank for broad, competitive terms immediately rarely works for a site with no accumulated authority. Narrower, more specific keywords — a service plus a specific locality, or a specific use case — are realistically winnable much sooner, and early wins build the momentum a broader strategy can later build on.
5. Content Before Link Building
A small number of genuine, relevant early links do help, but link building tends to matter more once the core content and technical foundation are solid. Spending early effort chasing links before the site itself is ready to convert that traffic is a common and avoidable mistake.
6. A Realistic First-90-Days Priority List
- Weeks 1-2: technical audit, sitemap submission, Search Console and Analytics set up correctly.
- Weeks 2-6: core pages built out properly for your 3-5 most important, achievable keywords.
- Weeks 4-8: Google Business Profile set up if you have a local presence to establish.
- Weeks 6-12: first pieces of genuine content published, and early, relevant link opportunities pursued.
7. Common Mistakes With New Websites
Launching With Thin Content
Placeholder or minimal copy on key pages that gives Google little to rank.
Targeting Terms Too Competitive Too Soon
Chasing broad keywords with no realistic chance of ranking for months.
Skipping Search Console Setup
No visibility into indexing status, errors or early performance data.
Expecting Fast Results
Judging a new site's SEO after a few weeks instead of the realistic months-long timeline.
